Explosion at Private University: Victims Increase to 10 People Including One Death
KUALA LUMPUR, 12 Jan (Bernama) — The number of victims of the AC compressor explosion incident at HELP University in Bukit Damansara this morning increased to 10 people with one of them dying.
Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said the deceased was a 24-year-old local man who worked for an AC contractor company. He was confirmed to have died while receiving treatment at Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL).
“The latest development is that other victims have been identified, bringing the total involvement to 10 people compared to the nine people previously reported,” he said in his statement here today.
Fadil said that eight of the victims were local residents, while the other two were foreigners.
Of the eight local residents, one man who was a contractor employee died and two others were seriously injured.
He said the other five residents who were injured consisted of two male and female students and a technician with varying degrees of injury.
Meanwhile, the two foreigners involved were male Indonesian citizens who worked as canteen workers and suffered minor injuries, he said.
Fadil said that the nine victims received treatment at various nearby hospitals, including the University of Malaya Medical Center (PPUM), Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL), and Sungai Buloh Hospital.
Previously, Fadil reportedly said that the police received an emergency call regarding an explosion in the maintenance area next to the canteen on the fourth floor of the private university building at 11.40.
Director of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Kuala Lumpur Hassan ‘As’ari Omar, when contacted, said initial investigations found the explosion was caused by an AC gas leak and the investigation team was still at the scene.
A Bernama survey at the scene this morning found that two JBPM K9 Detection Unit dogs were also used in the rescue operation.
