Prehistoric Human Framework Collection from the Archaeological Site of Kepah Guar was successfully brought back to Malaysia
Kuala Lumpur, August 29, 2025 – Division and framework of prehistoric humans from the Archaeological Site of Guar Kepah, Penang has been successfully brought home after more than eight decades in the Netherlands.
The success of bringing home the country’s archeological inheritance was made by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) through the National Heritage Department (JWN) in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign and Penang Government.
Motac in a statement said the return of the property reflects the success of Malaysian cultural diplomacy and the determination of the Madani government to strengthen national identity through the preservation of the history and heritage of the nation.
The official ceremony of the historic collection took place at the Ministry of Education, Culture and Dutch Sciences, Den Hague.
The Malaysian delegation was led by Secretary of Motac -GeNAL DATO ‘Shaharuddin Abu Sohot, along with the Malaysian Ambassador to the Netherlands, Dato’ Roseli Abdul, Director of JWN -Commissioner General and Heritage, Mohamad Muda Bahadin and related officials.
“The signing session of transfer recognition (AOT) by representatives from the two countries became a symbol of the success of this cultural diplomacy, which strengthened Malaysian bilateral relations,” Motac said.
He added that the return process began in 2021 after the Penang state government expressed his desire to show off this collection at the Archaeological Gallery Guar Kepah which was being developed at a North Perai Perai.
Since March 2023, a series of negotiations have been carried out before the Dutch government agreed to return the collection through the official Secretary of State for Culture and the media to the Malaysian Ambassador. For nearly four years, JWN was in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and related institutions to ensure that the return comply with the legal procedures of the two countries.

“Motac has expressed the highest appreciation to the Dutch government and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Dutch science for their approval and agility in the return of this valuable collection.
“Thank you are also addressed to the Penang State Government, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Malaysian Embassy in the Netherlands, the Malaysian Ministry of Health, the Malaysian Customs Department, the Attorney General’s Office, the Control and Border Protection Agency, the Malaysian Ministry of Transportation and everyone who ensured the smooth process.
“This success clearly symbolizes the spirit of Madani which emphasizes the success, accountability, welfare, enthusiasm, and respect.
“This reflects the value of transparency and sharing responsibilities in ensuring that historical heritage is not marginalized, but is restored to the eyes of the people. This initiative also strengthens the sustainability of culture, fostering community tendencies and showing close cooperation between the central government, state and international partners for the welfare of future generations,” he added.
This collection of Guar Kepah will be placed in the Guar Archaeological Gallery Guar Kepah starting in September 2025
“It is expected to be an attraction for a high impact in its relationship with Malaysia’s visit in 2026, thus strengthening the aspirations of civilization in promoting national identity, strengthening cultural values and improving the country’s history as a source of national power,” Motac said.
