Postponement of SUKMA: Selangor Government Takes View of Assembly Members, Sultan’s Decree Becomes Guidance
NATURAL LEGITIMATEApril 20 (Bernama) — The Selangor State Government will consider the views of all members of the State Legislative Council (DUN) in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) session regarding the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah’s order to postpone the 2026 Malaysian Games (SUKMA).
State Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Exco Mohd Najwan Halimi said he respected the Sultan of Selangor’s order at the opening of the Selangor State Assembly today, especially regarding the proposed postponement of the biennial sports competition.
However, we will wait for the DPRD members to discuss and (listen to) their views and from there, God willing, the state government will review and see the need for (SUKMA Selangor 2026) to be postponed or continued.
“In any case, Tuanku Sultan’s orders must be used as guidance and guidelines in making decisions. At this state assembly meeting, we will hand it over to the state council members to discuss first,” he told reporters after the Opening Ceremony of the 15th Selangor State Assembly 2026 Fourth Period here today.
Mohd Najwan, who is also the Chair of the 22nd SUKMA and 2026 SUKMA Selangor Organizing Committee, believes that the postponement needs to be studied comprehensively considering that it is a national level event which is decided jointly with other states and the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS).
Previously, Sultan Sharafuddin assessed that the implementation of SUKMA Selangor 2026 should be postponed until the crisis in West Asia is over and the redevelopment of the Shah Alam Stadium is fully completed.
SUKMA Selangor 2026 is scheduled to take place from 15 to 24 August.
Minister of Youth and Sports Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari previously said the biennial match would be held on a smaller scale to save on organizing costs without reducing the number of sports and events being contested.
He said that this step was taken after the Supreme Committee for Sports became aware of the global energy crisis and the impact of the world economy which was also being felt in the country.
