Know the Article about ‘Pink Poop’ on the Water Room Floor

Try to pay close attention to the corners of the bathroom floor, the gaps in the mosaic or the area around the toilet water hole in your house. Have you ever seen pink or reddish-orange stains?

Many consider it normal and harmless. Many people also think it’s just the effect of bath soap or rust from tap water.

But in fact, the pink dirt is not just soap residue. This is a living colony of bacteria known as “Serratia marcescens”. Worryingly, this bacteria should not be touched with bare hands.

Why do these bacteria ‘like’ to live in the bathroom?

According to the Public Health Malaysia partnership, this bacteria really likes two things, namely:

1. Humidity – A bathroom that is always wet and lacks ventilation is an ideal environment for these bacteria to live.

2. Food sources – Fat and phosphorus residues from shampoo, bath soap and hair conditioner are the main ‘food’ for these bacteria.

The more soap residue left on the floor or between the mosaics, the more fertile the bacteria will breed. That’s why the pink color can become brighter and more visible.

Is it dangerous?

For healthy people, this bacteria may not immediately cause serious impacts, apart from making the bathroom look dirty and unhealthy.

However, it is risky for groups such as individuals with low immunity, the elderly and children.

“Serratia marcescens” is opportunistic. If this bacteria enters the body through open wounds, eyes, or the urinary tract, it can cause infections such as:

  • Urinary tract infection (UTI)
  • Wound infection
  • Lung inflammation (pneumonia)

Effective way to remove pink stains

This bacteria is quite stubborn and is not easily removed with ordinary soap. Here are the recommended steps:

  • Use detergent that contains bleach.
  • Scrub using a brush, because this bacteria has a slippery biofilm layer that is difficult to remove.
  • Make sure the bathroom has good ventilation by opening a window or door to dry the area quickly.
