MRL Appoints Maxis as Provider of 4G and 5G Network Infrastructure across ECRL Coverage – Fahmi

KUANTAN, Feb 11 (Bernama) — Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL) has appointed Maxis Berhad (Maxis) as the provider of 4G and 5G mobile network infrastructure along the East Coast Rail Line (ECRL), said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

He said this approach not only optimizes infrastructure use, but also allows service providers to focus on improving user experience as well as the quality of service to the community.

“This collaboration marks another important step by the government in its efforts to build the country’s digital future, along with building physical infrastructure on a national scale, especially through the implementation of high-impact projects such as the ECRL,” he said.

He conveyed this when he was a speaker at the Special Launching Ceremony for the Arrival of the Golden Tren EMU & E-Loco ECRL Project and the Handing Over of the Letter of Appointment as Cellular Network Infrastructure Provider for the ECRL Line at KotaSAS Station here today.

The ceremony was officiated by Transport Minister Anthony Loke and was also attended by Principal Secretary Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, Transport Ministry Principal Secretary Datuk Seri Jana Santhiran Muniayan and Pahang Public Works, Transport and Health Committee Chairman Datuk Razali Kassim.

Meanwhile, Fahmi said the Ministry of Transportation through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) would implement a collaborative approach involving the country’s five main mobile network operators based on the principle of sharing infrastructure.

“This initiative is also in line with the government’s ‘Where There’s a Road, There’s an Internet’ policy which aims to ensure Internet coverage is available along the country’s main roads, highways and transport routes, including the ECRL route,” he said.

Apart from that, he said, his party will also introduce a Multi-Operator Core Network which will be used together with other service providers such as CelcomDigi, Telekom Malaysia, and YTL.

Fahmi said the integrated approach will benefit ECRL passengers and strengthen network coverage along the ECRL corridor covering urban areas, new transit-oriented urban developments, suburban and rural areas.

“With the completion of this network infrastructure, Maxis, CelcomDigi, U Mobile, YTL and Telekom Malaysia will be able to provide 4G and 5G services to ECRL passengers with coverage quality levels that comply with the Mandatory Quality of Service Standard (MSQoS),” he said.
