Petition Regarding Argentina Squad’s Participation in World Cup Allegedly Recorded More Than 23 Million Signatures
An online petition calling for the Argentine national team to be expelled from the next edition of the FIFA World Cup went viral last week and claims to have more than 23 million signatures.
According to the Marca portal, the petition started on the Argentina Out website emerged during the 2026 World Cup.
They argued that there was an alleged bias that made the referee favor the Argentine team throughout the tournament.
The campaign came into focus after Argentina’s group stage match, before heating up after the knockout round against Egypt and continuing into the next knockout round.
This erupted after a number of users shared videos and photos on social media claiming the Argentine national team was receiving special treatment.
Initially, this campaign only targeted five million signatures.
However, according to data published by the organizers, the initiative managed to obtain a total of 23,316,108 signatures.
The petition ended after Spain’s victory in the final.
“More than 23 million people from 170 countries signed this petition in less than a week. FIFA ignored us, but Spain got it done. Thank you, Spain,” said a statement on the site.
However, despite the dissatisfaction voiced, the number of signatures of the “Argentina Out” campaign did not reach one million signatures and broke the Guinness World Record.
For information, the 2000 Jubilee Movement which demanded debt relief for the poorest countries before the start of the new millennium reportedly succeeded in collecting 24,319,181 signatures.
Meanwhile, according to the portal, the archived version of the initiative clearly warns that the figures displayed on the page are the number of views and not the number of verified signatures.
It also clarified that the campaign only reflects the views of fans and has nothing to do with FIFA, the Argentine Football Association (AFA), any national federation, or the players mentioned.
The campaign also does not mean that world football’s governing body has taken an official decision.
Even so, FIFA has reportedly opened an investigation into the riot incident that occurred after the final match against Spain.
A number of names of players from Argentina such as Nahuel Molina and Leandro Paredes, apart from the coaching staff, were also included in the investigation.
So far, FIFA has not announced any possible punishment. World football’s governing body will wait until the disciplinary process is complete before issuing an official decision, which is expected to come within weeks at the earliest.
