Malaysia Calls for Maduro’s Release, Says Detention Violates International Law
Malaysia has called for the release of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores following their arrest in a military operation carried out by the United States (US).
Via delivery Anwar Ibrahim on Facebook, such actions constitute a clear violation of international law and an unlawful use of force against a sovereign state.
Apart from that, he also explained that the forced dismissal of the head of government through external action was a dangerous precedent in international relations.
“President Maduro and his wife must be released without undue delay
“Whatever the reason, the forcible removal of the head of government through outside intervention sets a dangerous precedent
“This weakens basic limits on the use of power between states and weakens the legal framework that supports international peace,” he said.
Malaysia respects international law
Anwar explained that the Venezuelan people have the right to determine their own political future.
According to him, history shows that a sudden change of leadership through outside intervention only brings more harm, especially in a country struggling with economic difficulties and deep social tensions.
Malaysia appreciates the importance of respecting international law and national sovereignty as the basis for peaceful relations between countries, Anwar said.
He also called for an approach through dialogue, constructive engagement as an effective way to protect the people and enable the Venezuelan people to realize their aspirations without causing harm.
