Requirements for animals that can be used as sacrificial animals –


Towards Eid al-Adha or also known as Lebaran Hajj, Muslims began to get ready to carry out sacrificial worship. One of the main concerns is the selection of sacrificial animals according to the Shari’a. Sacrificial worship can be done in various ways, both by buying sacrificial animals directly, through the mosque committee, as well as through a trusted zakat and sacrificial institution. For Muslims who choose to buy their own sacrificial animals, it is very important to understand and pay attention to the conditions that make the sacrifice valid according to religious provisions.

The following is a complete description of the terms and conditions of sacrificial animals in Islam:

1. Types of sacrificial animals
Animals that can be used as sacrifices are livestock such as camels, cows or cattle, goats, sheep, or sheep. These animals have been clearly mentioned in the Shari’a as a legitimate animal to be sacrificed.

2. Age of sacrificial animals in accordance with the provisions of the Shari’a
The age of the animal must meet the minimum standards set. In Islamic Sharia, the age of sacrificial animals is mentioned in terms of rich (perfect adults) and Jaza’ah (half a year for sheep).

    • Rich Because camels are at least five years and enter the sixth year.

    • Rich For cows or cattle is a minimum of two years and enter the third year.

    • Rich For goats are at least one year and enter the second year.

    • Jaza’ah For sheep or sheep are at least six months old.

3. Animal physical condition

Sacrificial animals must be in good health and not defective. Physical disability can cause sacrifice to be invalid. The physical criteria for sacrificial animals that must be considered:

      • Animals are not limping

      • Not blind, both one eye and both eyes

      • Not thin until the bone marrow is gone

      • Not paralyzed, do not lose legs or limbs

4. Status of Sacrificial Animal Ownership
Sacrificial animals must belong to people who sacrifice, both personally and union with permission from other unions. Animals should not come from goods that are still in disputes, such as pawning goods or inheritance that have not been divided. Purchase transactions must be legal in Islamic law.

5. Time of Sacrifice
The massacre of sacrifice only applies on Eid al -Adha (Nahr Day) and three days later. The massacre outside was not considered legal as a worship of sacrifice.

6. The condition of the animal that is pursued for sacrifice
In addition to valid requirements, there are also physical conditions that do not cancel sacrifice but makruh (disliked), such as:

  • Al-Ahba ‘animals that lose most of the ears or horns

  • Al-MuqabalahThe ears of the animal are completely cut off

  • Al-MudabirahThe back of the ear is interrupted

  • Ash-Sy-Syarqa ‘Ears torn because of marking

  • Al-Khakktorn ears with elongated or widening shape

  • Al-Musay ‘animals that are weak and not excited

  • Al-MushafarahAnimals with damaged milk or buttocks, also crazy animals

Animals that lose teeth or broken horns are still considered makruh to be sacrificed, but do not cancel sacrifice.

  1. Gender of sacrificial animals
    There is no argument that requires sacrificial animals must be male. Females are also allowed, both for Eid al -Adha sacrifice and for Aqiqah, as long as they are in good health and are not pregnant.

  2. Recommended in choosing sacrificial animals
    It is recommended to choose animals that have a good body, healthy, not disabled, and fleshy. Although animals with criteria like this usually have a higher price, it is comparable to the better quality of sacrifice.

  3. Distribution of sacrificial meat
    People who sacrifice are encouraged to eat some of their sacrificial meat, give as many as possible to the poor, and may also give some to relatives or neighbors. Although the main thing is giving to those in need, but there is no prohibition to share with anyone.

By observing all of the above, Muslims are expected to provide sacrifice perfectly and in accordance with the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam and the guidance of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala.
