KUALA LUMPUR — Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) announced the termination of the operation of the South Express Train service on the Gemas-JB Sentral-Gemas route effective January 1 2026.

This is after nine years of train operation and serving passengers in the Southern sector.

“The six Southern Express services currently operating namely Nos. 41, 42, 43, 44, 45 and 46 will cease operating from the relevant date.

“This suspension is part of the coordination of planning and operational optimization of passenger services on the southern route, in line with the progress and readiness of the infrastructure for the Gemas-Johor Bahru Electric Double Track Project,” said KTMB in its statement today.

Meanwhile, KTMB informed that the travel needs of Southern sector passengers will continue to be strengthened through the full operation of electric train services (ETS) to JB Sentral with eight services a day, starting January 1 2026.

“With the completion of this ETS service, passengers can now enjoy a more modern, user-friendly and environmentally friendly journey, in addition to offering more efficient travel times, as well as a safer and more comfortable travel experience.

However, the Timuran People’s Express (ERT) service on the JB Sentral-Tumpat-JB Sentral route will continue to operate as usual and will remain the main travel choice for passengers on the southern sector to the East Coast.
