HTA managed to separate the Siamese twin pair
The second historic was made at the Tunku Azizah Hospital (HTA) when a pair of Siamese babies had three months were successfully separated in operations that lasted for almost 13 hours.
The baby is the type of “Omphaloischiophagus tetratus twin twins”. This is a very rare condition where both of them are connected to the stomach and pelvis and share four legs.
According to a statement issued by HTA, a large operation began at 8.30 in the morning and ended at 21:48 on June 24.
Full separation occurred at 17:43. At present, the two babies are in a stable condition and receive further treatment in the Child Intensive Care Unit (PICU).
HTA added that the operation was led by an experienced pediatrician team including Dr. Mohd Yusof Abdullah, Dato ‘Dr. Zakaria Zahari, Dr. Intan Zarina Fakir Mohamed and Dr. Phang Yee Yun.
What was also involved was the HTA Pediatric Surgery team and Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) which showed extraordinary commitment and cooperation.
It is understood that this is the fourth case of the Siamese twin separation operation that has been successfully implemented in HTA since 2019, and is the overall case of 19 in the history of the HTA/HKL combination.
Meanwhile, on this occasion, let’s pray that the two babies continue to grow healthy and cheerful.
